The complete qualification journey
From car licence to coach driver
Tell us about your current licence, driving history and experience. We will discuss the role, qualification process and what professional coach driving involves. Candidates may be invited to an interview and driving assessment.
Before practical training can begin, you normally need the correct provisional bus entitlement. The required vocational driver medical is included within our scheme. We can guide you through the application process, but DVLA makes the licensing decision.
Driver CPC Part 1 consists of two separately booked elements: multiple-choice questions and hazard perception. Both must be passed to obtain the theory-test certificate needed for the practical driving tests.
Candidates who intend to drive professionally will normally also need Driver CPC Part 2, a computer-based case-study test covering situations a professional driver may face at work.
Develop safe control of a full-size passenger vehicle, including cockpit preparation, mirror use, positioning, observation, anticipation, speed management, junctions, passenger comfort and safe decision-making.
The practical qualification is divided into Part 3a off-road exercises and Part 3b on-road driving. Part 3a must be passed before Part 3b. Training covers the required manoeuvres, vehicle-safety questions and professional road-driving standard.
Professional drivers will normally need Part 4, covering practical vehicle-related knowledge such as loading, security, emergencies and carrying out a complete vehicle safety check.
Suitable candidates may have the opportunity to join Cozys and progress to further vehicle familiarisation, route or work-type training and company induction. Employment remains subject to satisfactory checks, performance and a suitable position being available.
Flexible entry routes
You can fund your own training and complete the professional Category D qualification with support from an experienced passenger-transport operator.
The package includes the required vocational driver medical and required first-attempt DVSA test fees, alongside the agreed training and preparation. Before enrolling, you will receive a written quotation explaining exactly what is included and any costs that could arise if additional training or a test retake is required.
Completing self-funded training does not require you to accept employment with Cozys. Suitable candidates may nevertheless be considered for available driving opportunities once qualified.
For the right candidate, Cozys may fund the agreed Category D training programme, required driver medical and required first-attempt DVSA test fees.
Company-funded training is linked to employment with Cozys and requires a written three-year training repayment agreement. If the employee leaves during that period, some of the training cost will normally become repayable. The amount reduces over the three years and reaches zero after the full commitment is completed.
The exact calculation and conditions will be provided in writing before funding is accepted. Selection depends on interview, assessment, suitability, recruitment checks and business requirements.
| Test | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Part 1a | Multiple-choice theory test |
| Part 1b | Hazard-perception test |
| Part 2 | Driver CPC case studies |
| Part 3a | Off-road practical exercises |
| Part 3b | On-road practical driving and vehicle-safety questions |
| Part 4 | Practical demonstration of professional vehicle knowledge |
DVSA commonly describes this as five tests, but Part 1 contains two separately booked testsmultiple choice and hazard perceptionwhich is why six rows are shown. Candidates with previous vocational entitlements or Driver CPC history may follow a different route.
Training with a real operator
Cozys is a long-established family coach operator with more than 40 years experience in passenger transport. Training with an operator connects each driving skill to its practical purpose:
Our aim is to develop safe, thoughtful and employable professional driversnot simply to teach candidates how to follow a test route.
As a general guide, candidates beginning the full professional qualification route will normally need to:
Do not rule yourself out simply because you have never driven a large vehicle. Professional training builds the necessary skills progressively and safely.
Category D is the vocational entitlement generally required to drive a bus or coach with more than eight passenger seats. The exact entitlement depends on the vehicle and how it will be used.
Yes. The standard route requires a full car driving licence before applying for provisional Category D entitlement.
If driving a bus or coach will be the main part of your job, you will normally need the full Driver CPC as well as Category D. Limited exemptions exist for particular vehicles and uses.
The normal minimum age for the professional qualification route is 18, although restrictions and exceptions can apply. Vocational licences renew every five years and annually from age 65.
The timescale varies according to licence processing, test availability, previous experience and individual progress. We will recommend a training plan after assessing your starting point.
The standard route is self-funded. Company funding may be offered to selected candidates suitable for employment with Cozys. It is subject to a written three-year agreement under which some training costs are repayable on a reducing scale if the employee leaves early.
The agreed training programme, required vocational driver medical and required first-attempt DVSA test fees are included. Your quotation or funding agreement will identify any potential extra charges, including additional training or test retakes.
Yes. External candidates are very welcome and can complete the scheme on a self-funded basis without committing to employment with Cozys.
No. The right candidates may have the opportunity to join Cozys, subject to successful qualification, training performance, satisfactory checks, company standards and a suitable vacancy.
Tell us when you enquire. Your route can differ depending on the categories you hold, when you qualified and whether you previously held Driver CPC.
